OGM Tamping’s (OGM Caps) (Cartridge Explosive)

What the product consists of OGM Tamping’s are a specialized, dolomite-based stemming/tamping material manufactured at our facility in Vereeniging. The product is formulated as a blend of:

  • Crushed and screened metallurgical-grade dolomite (graded sinter) – provides rigid wedging chips that lock into the blast hole and maximize gas confinement and expansion.
  • ECCA bentonite clay – acts as a sealant and carrier, binding the dolomite chips together and closing off voids in the blast hole.

On recommendation from MiTek’s specialist material scientists, the dolomite fraction has been increased (richer in graded sinter) to significantly reduce the total crystalline silica content in the final product.

Testing & verification:

Formulation developed and optimized using external analysis by Mintek, including quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ICP-OES testing.

OGM Tamping’s are used as stemming/tamping material in underground blasting operations. Typical applications include:

  • Wedging and sealing blast holes in underground gold, platinum, coal and hard-rock mines.
  • Maximizing gas expansion and containment, improving fragmentation and overall blast efficiency.
  • Reducing dust and health risk by using a low-silica, dolomite-rich product designed to keep crystalline silica content below 5%.
  • Supporting safer, more controlled blasting with reduced fly rock and improved collar retention.

Kgwahla Tamping Compound for Emulsions Explosive

What the product consists of
Kgwahla is OGM’s alternative tamping compound, also designed specifically for underground mining conditions. Like OGM Tamping’s, it is based on a dolomite–bentonite system but supplied as a distinct product line to suit different site preferences and blasting practices.

The product consists of:

  • Metallurgical-grade dolomite (graded sinter) – crushed and screened for optimum wedging in the blast hole.
  • ECCA bentonite clay – providing sealing, binding and carrying action for the dolomite chips.

Kgwahla is formulated in line with the same Mintek-driven silica reduction strategy used for OGM Caps, ensuring a tamping product with controlled low crystalline silica content.

Key specs

Mineral
base:

  • Dolomite-rich blend with minor quartz and calcite
  • Dolomite component typically ±98% dolomite, ±1.7% quartz, ±0.1% calcite (based on metallurgical-grade dolomite analysis).

Blend
design:

  • Developed using Mintek recommendations to use a dolomite-rich tamping clay
  • Target ratio derived from approx. 86% metallurgical dolomite and 14% ECCA bentonite to keep quartz levels low.

Total crystalline silica target:

<5% total crystalline silica by mass in the finished product, aligned with Mintek analytical results for OGM Caps and Kgwahla.

Physical
form:

  • Free-flowing blend of graded dolomite chips and clay binder
  • Suitable for manual or mechanical loading into blast holes underground.

What the product is used for
Kgwahla is used as a low-silica tamping/ stemming compound for:

  • General underground blasting in stops, development ends and rises.
  • Blast-hole sealing and gas confinement, helping to improve fragmentation and reduce back-break.
  • Operations that priorities worker health and dust control, by using tamping with reduced crystalline silica levels.
  • Mines looking for a proven, Mintek-analysed tamping alternative that fits into existing blasting procedures.

Safe, Inert Products

OGM tamping’s and Kgwahla are formulated to be totally inert, meaning they do not react with explosives, rock or groundwater.

Protecting Health & Environment

Our products are designed so they do not pose a danger to miners, communities or the environment, supporting safer, healthier underground operations.

Easy & Safe to Remove

In the event of a mis-fired hole, OGM products are easily removed using on-face tools with water and air only, helping teams manage misfires quickly and safely.

Safe Handling & Storage

Because our tamping’s are inert and non-hazardous, they can be handled, transported and stored with minimal risk, reducing complexity and improving safety underground.

Safety as a Non-Negotiable Standard

From raw material selection to final delivery, safety is built into every stage of our process so mines can trust OGM products to support safe, responsible blasting.
